Urine Specimens (Random & 24 Hours)

Random Urine / MSU Specimens

  • Instruct patient to clean the genital area first before collecting the urine specimen.
  • Instruct patient to pass the first portion of urine away and collect only the mid-stream urine (MSU) into a sterile urine container.
  • Ensure that all urine containers are tightly capped to prevent spillage during transportation to the laboratory.
  • Specimens for culture should be obtained prior to the administration of antibiotics.

24 Hours Urine Specimens

  • Determine the test(s) required and use the 24 hr urine bottle with the correct preservative.
  • Collection of 24 hr urine:

Test results for 24 hr urine analysis are based on the total volume in a 24 hr period. Therefore, complete collection is vital for accurate results.

On the first day, the patient will empty bladder completely at a designated time (e.g. 8:00 a.m.). All subsequent urine to be collected into the 24 hr urine container.

On the next day, the patient will empty bladder at the same designated time (e.g. 8:00 a.m.) and add to the 24 hr urine container as the final sample.

For the urine creatinine clearance test, the result has to be corrected for the body surface area. Please provide the height (cm) and weight (kg) of the patient for the calculation.

Blood Specimens

  • To avoid mistake or mix-up, please ensure that the name of the patient is legibly written on the label of the specimen container.
  • For accuracy and reliability of test result, please use appropriate containers for different types of tests as specified in the service catalogue. Samples for blood sugar test are best in fluoride containers.
  • Anti-coagulated blood - EDTA, citrated, fluoride or lithium heparin blood must be properly mixed by gentle inversion of the tube for at least 15 times.
  • If blood specimens are to be kept, ensure that the blood containers are properly packed and stored in the compartment away from the coldest part of the refrigerator (This is to avoid the sample becoming frozen thus causing haemolysis).
  • Blood tests for glucose, electrolytes, calcium, phosphate. CPK, LDH and HBDH cannot be kept overnight. It is advisable that the patient be called back the following morning for these tests.
  • Please provide sufficient sample for testing. A repeat sampling will cause inconvenience to your patient.
  • All tubes and containers must be tightly capped to prevent spillage and contamination.
  • Do not send blood specimens in syringes as they are hazardous to you and those handling the specimens.

Seminal Specimen

  • Seminal Appraisal is only done in the morning (Monday to Friday). The patient must deliver the sample to the laboratory within two hours of collection. Condoms with spermicide should not be used as it will kill the sperms. Please advise patient to abstain from sexual activities for at least 3 days prior to testing.
  • If you require us to collect the sample from your clinic, please make an advance booking.

  • Seal bag properly at the top using the zip or staple.
  • Staple request form onto the top of bag above the sealer. (Do not put request form into the bag.)
